Since Elrood sector has no major shipyards of its own, the sector's craft are often of a type already well known throughout the rest of the galaxy. There are, however, a few ships who've played a significant part in the Tales of the Freespirit. Here they are... Bounce ShuttleCommon throughout the galaxy, the 'bounce shuttle' is but one of many varieties of small, cheap, extremely short range spacecraft. Typically found around space stations, bounce shuttles are employed when travel within a station is either impossible or undesirable (the craft gets its nickname from its tendency to 'bounce' from one hangar to another aboard a station). A pilot can hire one of these vehicles (ten credits is typical), and make his way to his destination by traversing the surface of the station, which is often more convenient than navigating an endless maze of turbolifts and corridors. The power on these shuttles is usually quite limited, an effective deterrent to those people who might consider simply flying away in one of the tiny vehicles. Although the bounce shuttle's thrusters are useless in an atmosphere, the craft are equipped with two ejector seats with old-style parachutes, limited life support, and an automatic emergency beacon, enabling the vehicle to serve as a perfectly effective escape pod. This, coupled with their low price tag, has made them a popular mode of quick transport the galaxy over.
FreespiritIf any one craft could be crowned as having gained the most notoriety in Elrood sector in the shortest time, it could only be the Ghtroc freighter that recently came to be known as the Freespirit. Captained by one Itar Grendling, this vessel has become the 'floating home' of the young human and his companions Avery and Resh, and their droids. But the vessel's history goes back further than that. The Freespirit first appeared in Elrood sector four years ago under the name Fintel's Delight, in the hands of Fintel the Duro, who had set out in search of a new career in independent shipping and trading. Looking for a region of space small and quiet enough for him to make a name for himself, he finally settled upon Elrood sector, and armed with boundless enthusiasm but woefully inexperienced, Fintel headed straight for the bustling world of Derilyn, unaware of that planet's recent Imperial subjugation. Fintel's Delight was seized as soon as it arrived in the Derilyn system, and conscripted into service to Imperial Mining Ltd. Her captain shared a similar fate, in the form of indentured service in the mines of Berea. It was here that the disillusioned Duro met the Wookiee Grakkata, a fellow slave, and the pair formed a fast friendship. It wasn't long before the Wookiee woman devised a plan of escape and, aware that Fintel's Delight had recently touched down at the work prison, had an easy time of convincing the young Duro to join in the daring breakout. The prison break was only partially successful. Although Grakkata was able to get free, Fintel was mortally wounded in the escape, living just long enough to will ownership of Fintel's Delight to the Wookiee woman. Grakkata escaped in the craft, and devoted herself to taking the best care of it possible, and reaping the riches that Fintel should have had. She treated the craft to a new paint job (a vibrant forest camouflage), a new name (Treespirit), assembled a pirate crew, and set about taking both the vessels of Imperial Mining and those belonging to other pirates by force. Ironically, it was during a legitimate passenger charter that Grakkata was killed by Binoshi agents working for both IML and the vile pirate lord Dorok Zalaster. Suddenly on their own, Grakkata's inexperienced crew were forced to learn the ins and outs of piracy and trading on their own, and to avenge the death of their friend and mentor. Reducing the vessel's appearance to an inconspicuous grey and adding an ion cannon to its arsenal, the crew re-christened the craft Freespirit, in honour of its fallen, ex-slave Wookiee captain, and blasted off in search of revenge. Kaggle FighterWhen Boss Kaggle got it into his head that he'd like to muscle his way into the inter-system piracy racket, he immediately sent his agents out to secure some starfighters. They returned shortly thereafter with an octet of stolen Zebra-class starfighters, to which the excitable Dazouri replied, "I don't want some ordinary snub fighters! These ships need to be the fastest in the sector! Fix 'em!" His technicians set to work to see what they could do about the (already quite speedy) fighters, and elected to trim down their hulls to the bare minimum, making the craft a little faster, and more agile. This severely weakened the ships, however. The technicians did their best to explain this to the little crime lord, who would listen to none of it. "By the time our victims realize they're sharing space with my fighters," he told them proudly, "they'll already be dead!". Excited about all the newly opened possibilities these craft would bring him, he re-christened this squadron the 'Kaggle fighters', giving each one its own individual name. His oversight cost him dearly. On their first mission, in a scuffle with Dorok Zalaster's pirate fleet and Grakkata's Treespirit, three of the four Kaggle fighters the crime boss deployed were destroyed, only Kaggle the Crafty managing to escape intact. This ship, along with Kaggle the Cunning, Kaggle the Proud, Kaggle the Survivor, and Kaggle the Victorious are all that remain of the Boss's beloved fighter squadron. In light of these events, Boss Kaggle is currently deciding if he should either a) recognize his limitations and forget the piracy business or b) get himself some better starfighters.
Mighty KaggleBoss Kaggle's personal command ship, the Mighty Kaggle is the vessel from which the little criminal hoped to lead his newly acquired pirate fleet to a fortune in ill-begotten riches. Although the Boss is realizing that his plan clearly wasn't meant to be, he still has a perfectly respectable transport vessel to take him from planet to planet, on those rare occasions he feels like leaving his palatial tower in Capital City. Although Kaggle's pirate fleet left a lot to be desired, the Mighty Kaggle is nonetheless a fast, tough starship. The Mighty Kaggle is equipped with a ventral fighter rack, which is capable of carrying four Kaggle fighters through hyperspace at one time. |
