Hyperion

Galactic Drive Systems built a fine reputation as a manufacturer of quality starship engines during the closing years of the Old Republic. As the political situation deteriorated, Gan Horlan, the owner and MD of GDS believed that there would be a market opportunity for a ship that would be robust and versatile enough to serve in troubled areas. He instructed his design team to come up with just such a vessel. The result was the Hyperion class bulk freighter. Horlan was so convinced of the success of the design, that he ordered the construction of several dozen ships, without having any firm orders on the books. As the Clone War ripped the heart out of the Republic, so the ships sat, waiting for someone to buy them. GDS was bankrupted by this blunder and the ships sold on to cover at least some of the creditors demands.

Strange, then, that it was only after the demise of GDS that the qualities of the Hyperion were discovered by the galaxy at large. They have good speed, are very robust and have a core system design that makes conversions very simple. Essentially they're a bullet shape design with a raised main bridge as a "lump" on the dorsal surface, and are powered by a four-exhaust engine. Of the original hulls constructed almost all are still in service, though no two Hyperions are the same as they have all been modified in some way from the original specification. That was the original idea of the designer, to create a vessel that could be individually modified to the new owner's whims. Originally the Hyperion also came equipped with a pair of quad laser turrets and a decent sensor package.

Some still ply the merchant trade, some have fallen into the hands of pirates and fill a role as fighter carriers whilst the Rebellion has acquired a couple to use as armed troop transports. Whilst some would like to revive production of the ship, the original engineering plans have been lost, it is presumed that Gan Horlan, devastated by the loss of his Company, had them destroyed. Horlan himself has not been heard of for years, and is believed by many to have committed suicide.
