K-1 Gunboat

Standard Model

Developed by the Nova Shipworks, the K-1 is a simple design that serves a variety of different functions. The primary role for the K-1 is point defence and systems patrol. The K-1 is well equipped for this task and is fast, manoeuvrable, and armed with a quad laser cannon that can deter most starfighters. For larger craft the K-1 carries a heavy laser cannon and concussion missiles. While fast and well armed, the K-1 suffers from a lack of hull and shield protection. The designers hoped that the skill of the pilots and gunners of these craft could overcome design flaws.

These ships are usually deployed in groups of three for customs and systems patrol. In Naval combat situations, they are placed in groups of 15 to 18 with corvettes in skirmish lines. They are found in territorial navies and Imperial fleets throughout the Outer Rim.

K-1c Gunboat - Customs Model

With the success of the original K-1, the Nova Shipworks began receiving holo-letters requesting all sorts of upgrades and improvements. One of these early requests was for a customs variant. Many of the first gunboats were purchased by systems governments and while they did excel at defence, there was something lacking in the way of customs duties.

The engineers at Nova took the K-1 and gave it a new modification deal that they soon called the "police package". Firstly, they removed all the heavy weapons and sensors from the ship. In their place the engineers put in an ion cannon, suitable for stopping most fleeing vessels, and an improved sensors package.

When released, Nova offered a 'buy back' program which allowed systems governments who had originally purchased the K-1, to part exchange their K-1s for K-1cs at a mere 10% of the K-1c's market value.

In reality Nova just performed the modifications and claimed the ships were "new" which was true, from a certain point of view. The program was a success and soon most systems, corporations, and the Empire in the five sectors located around Nova Shipworks used them extensively.

K-1o Gunboat - Observation/Recon Model

When the Galactic Empire began their massive arms build-up, every corporation clamoured to get as many military contracts as possible. In the Aur sector, the newly established Moff found himself with a need for recon ships. The people at Nova Shipworks went to the Moff with their proposal for an upgrade package for his Fleet's K-1 gunboats.

The engineers at Nova Shipworks made this ship as light as possible by removing all the heavy weapons from the ship and its troop carrying capacity as well. The quad cannon was moved from the ventral surface of the ship to the dorsal. A giant sensor dome was added to the top of the gunboat. This sensor dome greatly expanded the data footprint of the ship. These sensors are top of the line and rival many capital ship's sensors. These ships are almost always slaved through a C3 computer so that the entire group, squadron, or fleet can take advantage of the Observer's data.

The Moff was impressed by the K-1o and soon they were the mainstay of his recon lines and even expanded his forces so that every squadron could receive these ships. The word spread about these ships and within a year Nova Shipworks were receiving orders from fleets across the Outer Rim and even deeper towards the Core for the K-1o.

K-1t Gunboat - Torpedo Model

Since the start of the Civil War there has been a sharp increase in piracy. As time went on the pirates became richer and bolder and started using capital ships. Most convoy escorts were not strong enough to handle these new threats and Imperial protection for convoys were spotty at best since the bulk of the fleet was involved in the hunt for the Rebel Alliance.

Requests came to the Nova Shipworks to create a ship that could take on both starfighters and capital ships. The engineers basically removed the heavy weapons, and replaced them with a proton torpedo launcher. The ship carriers 6 torpedoes in storage that required the troop capacity and the cargo space had to be adjusted so that the automated loading system and storage facilities could be added. Overall, the K-1t is a decent ship and the Empire has ordered several dozen of these ships to round out their skirmish lines, but tackling capital ships alone is a job best left for other capital ships.

K-1g Gunboat - Ground Support Model

While reading the Imperial Defence Network, an sales executive for Nova Shipworks came across an article detailing on how the Navy was refusing to allow the Army have starfighters to fill out its ground support wings. The article went on to say that many sector armies were using old TIEs and Z-95s, but that it seemed that the problem was going to resolve itself.

This executive went to the designers and engineers to ask if it were possible to modify the K-1 to provide a ground support variant. Two months later the people at Nova Shipworks presented the K-1g to the Imperial Army of the Aur sector. After the siege of Maltor II the K-1g showed their worth by acting as a mobile gun-platform/artillery piece/bomber and also in its anti-Starfighter role. The K-1gs are deployed in squadrons of 12 ships assigned to an Auxiliary Battle group throughout the Aur sector. Trials have begun in the Tolgon, Tralxi, and Baril sectors to see if its better to replace their own ground support 'fighters with the K-1gs.

K-1fc Gunboat - Fighter Carrier Model

One of the few failures of the K-1 program, the K-1fc began as a way of improving the convoy protection capabilities by adding a pair of fighters, which would increase the combat capabilities. The engineers removed the missile launchers and troops from the ship. In their place, two external rack were added to the K-1. One rack was added to each side, but the pilots cannot enter the fighters from the gunboat. So they either have to be carried into battle in their TIEs (which would limit the time in space to how long the air supply in the TIEs, about 2 days), or they travel in the gunboat and then space walk to the fighters (which is very dangerous in combat situations).

The addition of these racks also lead to a lost in manoeuvrability for the K-1, thus losing one of its main advantages. The sales brochure for the K-1fc suggested that they be bought in groups of two so that the fighter carrying capabilities can be taken advantage of. The Aur Sector Fleet thought this was too much a waste, since for the same price as six (a full squadron of TIEs) they could buy a light cruiser with greater protection and the ability to logistically support the fighters. Nova was able to sell some to corporate concerns, but sales never reached the level for the project to be viable and the line was discontinued after one year.

K-1a Gunboat - Assault Model

Another one of the failures of K-1 programs was the K-1a. This ship was one of the few requests that came from the Aur Sector Fleet. The Moff of the Aur Sector was looking for a ship to replace their Blastboat fleet, which was being reassigned to other sectors that were in greater need of those resources. In order to create this variant a few significant changes were made to the design. First all the heavy weapons were taken out, the cargo capacity was drastically reduce including it's range, and it's troops were taken out. In their place, a capital grade laser cannon and generator were installed. However the generator was small for a capital class weapon, and so the fire rate of the K-1 was considerably limited.

The Sector Forces did purchased about fifty ships and deployed them in two special assault skirmish lines. After three months one of these units was sent to support a battle against the Rebel fleet of the Aur Sector. During the battle the weakness of these craft were shown and about 15 of the 25 ships were lost. The Moff quickly broke up the remaining unit and reassigned them into regular gunboat units. He also stopped all further orders for additional K-1as. Nova took a slight lost on the K-1a run, but sales were good that year and so the company survived the fiasco.
