K-2 Escort

Shortly after the introduction of the K-1 gunboat, Nova Shipworks decided expand their line of defence starships. Considering the number of pirate attacks that were affecting the Tri-Sector Region it was logical that their next model would be a convoy escort. The designers spent the next year working on the design that would be called the K-2. They analysed the tactics and ships employed by the local pirate gangs of the region and the staff believed that they created a vessel able to defend a convoy from most craft.

Gearing towards head-to-head combat with pirate craft, the K-2 has most of its weapons systems facing forward. The K-2 carries ten turbolasers for anti-capital starship combat. The four ion cannons help in weakening the pirate craft for the turbolasers and also for crippling the vessel for boarding actions when crews are needed for "questioning". In what would become a standard feature on all future Nova combat ships, the K-2 was equipped with four laser cannons to handle any starfighter attacks. The K-2 also has an advanced sensor system for a ship of its size, which allows the craft to detect any ships moving towards the convoy in advance and prepare for combat.

Nova Shipworks had hoped to make a fortune off the K-2 by selling them to all the companies hit hardest by pirate attacks in the region, but others had a different future planned for the K-2. Through his contacts and spies, the pirate Lord Kaine found out about the development of the K-2. During the next two years he inserted a number of agents into Nova Shipworks. Many of these men ended up on the K-2 project as the flight crew, including the command crew.

When the ship cleared its moorings it jumped into hyperspace and disappeared. It returned a year later, modified, and in the service of Kaine's pirate fleet. The ship proved to be as good at convoy raiding as its designers had intended it to be for convoy protection. The sector officials started looking into where such a ship could have come from, and began looking into Nova Shipworks. The people at Nova destroyed all plans for the ship and silenced/paid off all those involved to cover their tracks.
