Ghartan Fynik - Bodyguard

A human male native to Ranivir, Ghartan is an impressive physical specimen, standing all but 2m tall and weighing in at a muscle packed 150kg. His sheer physical presence gave him an edge growing up, and Ghartan slipped down the slope into being a bully. His actions attracted the attention of a local crime boss called simply "The Shark", who drew Ghartan into his burgeoning empire with clever words and half-truths. By the time Ghartan realised what was happening, he was trapped in a web of intrigue, with enough evidence against him to send him to prison for many years. He adapted to his new life as best he could, but it gave him no pleasure. Maturing rapidly, he saw the so-called victories of his youth for the hollow, self-destructive acts they truly were. Whilst he sought a way out from The Shark's clutches, Ghartan, or "Bruiser" as he had become known, followed the letter of his instructions, realising that if he failed in his task, that not only would he suffer, but the person he tried to spare would suffer too, as Shark sent some of his other goons who didn't share Ghartan's new found outlook.

Ghartan found his salvation in an unusual situation. Shark had sent him to warn off an off-worlder who was trying to set up an information broking operation on Ranivir. Shark didn't like this, as the Cerean hadn't asked for permission to operate on "his" turf. Ghartan had no problem tracking down the Cerean, known as Ki-Da, and approached him, hoping to be able to use reason (and presence), rather than force, as had become his way. He was surprised when Ki-Da, far from either pulling a blaster or stammering an apology and running for the spaceport (the usual response), simply engaged him in conversation. Having recovered somewhat from this shock, Ghartan decided to take a chance, and told Ki-Da his story. Listening carefully, the Cerean gently probed Ghartan for details, then offered him a way out. Sick of what his life had become, Ghartan accepted, even knowing that he would likely face time in jail.

With Ki-Da's help, Ghartan set up a sting operation, which trapped not only the Shark, but also all of his chief lieutenants. Ki-Da then represented Ghartan in court and pulled off a plea bargain, which saw Ghartan avoid jail, escaping with a fine (paid by Ki-Da) and a suspended sentence. Shark and his cronies were sent down for many years.

Grateful to be free of Shark's clutches at last, Ghartan was unsure what Ki-Da expected in return; had he exchanged one form of control for another? When he found out that Ki-Da expected nothing from him, Ghartan was confused. All his life he had dealt in terms of calling in favours for past services, to find someone who helped him and expected nothing in return (Ghartan didn't find out until later that Ki-Da had been hired by a Corporate client to stop Shark from extorting money from a local subsidiary) was a novelty Ghartan couldn't come to terms with. He muttered a thank you and returned to his home.

A few days later, having spent a great deal of time thinking, Ghartan sought out Ki-Da, thankful to find him still on planet. He offered his services as a bodyguard, explaining that he could find honour as a protector that he could not in his former line of work. Ki-Da accepted, and Ghartan has been his right hand man ever since.
