Starship Crew Calculator

Introduction

This system is designed to calculate reasonable crew numbers for military starships. Several game statistics are used, including length, cargo capacity, number of troops carried, and the number of embarked ships (ex: fighters) among other things. The system also tells you how many of each type of personnel a ship has. You can also see a complete list of crew types.

Automated Excel-based Crew Calculator (38k)

WEG D6 System: This system was originally designed for use with the WEG version of the Star Wars RPG. As such, no modifications are needed.

WotC D20 System: This system can be used with virtually no modification with the new WotC version. The only real change is the lack of capital-class and starfighter-class weapons. For our purposes, simply treat all the weapons as capital-class. The other difficulty with using this with the new WotC system is the lack of detail given in the ship descriptions. For instance little detail is given in the descriptions for how many and what type of starships and vehicles are carried.

Restrictions: This system is only meant for use on military capital-class combat starships. These are crew-intensive ships and as such most other types would use significantly less crew. In addition, the system is only for use on ships between 50 and 2000m.

The following crew are present for every 100m of ship. Apply normal rounding.

Weapon Crew

The following crew may or may not be present, depending how many and what type of weapons a ship carries. This section comprises what is listed as "gunners" by WEG.

• Turbolasers, Lasers, Ion Cannon, and other energy weapons:
  1 Gunner
  1 Power Regulator (only if a capital-scale weapon)
  
  
• Missile Weapons: (includes missiles, torpedoes, rockets, bombs, etc.)
  1 Missile Operator
  1 Munitions Loader
  1 Power Operator
  
  
• Tractor Beams:
  1 Tractor Beam Operator

Miscellaneous Crew

The following crew may or may not be present, depending on the specific ship. Apply normal rounding.

• Cargo:
  1 Cargo Assistant (per 1000 metric tons of cargo)
  
  
• Hangars:
  For each fighter, shuttle, dropship, barge, or other starship carried:
  1 Loader
  1 Mechanic
  Plus, the listed crew of the starship docked
  
  
• Garages:
  For each walker, speeder (excluding speeder bikes), tanks, or other ground vehicle carried:
  1 Loader
  1 Mechanic
  Plus, the listed crew of the vehicle docked
  
  
• Troops:
  For every 100 troops that are carried on board:
  2 Cooks
  1 Yeoman
  1 Armorer

A Note on Crew Shifts

Crewmen aboard Small Starships usually work on a two-shift basis due to space constraints aboard the vessel. Onboard larger vessels, they tend to work on a three-shift basis. Shifts have already been taken into account in the above numbers.
