Given the number of habitable worlds in Elrood sector, there are bound to be plenty of new species living on them. Here follow entries on some of the more memorable ones. Although this is a list of creatures in Elrood sector, these animals, unless stated otherwise, could conceivably be found anywhere in the galaxy... Almaran BloodflyNative to the jungles of Almar, these small flying insects have proven themselves a mild annoyance to visitors of the lush, tropical world. When collected together and trained by the mysterious Binoshi Assassins, however, these simple pests become a serious threat to man or beast. In the wild, the carnivorous Almaran bloodflies work cooperatively to ensure their entire colony has the food it needs to survive. Normally targeting large, warm-blooded animals, the bloodflies attack en masse, biting the animal viciously and injecting the unfortunate creature with a unique kind of tranquilizing venom. When the animal loses consciousness, the bloodfly colony feasts on its sleeping form. If given enough time (24 hours is typical), the unpleasant insects can reduce a man-sized animal to mere bones. However, these grisly feeding habits were always confined to the deepest jungles of Almar, and sentient humanoid life was always safe from the little savages... until now. Though studies by numerous xenobiologists have been unable to prove as much, it is believed that, when several Almaran bloodflies are gathered into a group (or bunch, as they are commonly called), the insects are able to achieve a sort of 'group consciousness'. So far, the bloodflies have only been known to display these characteristics while under the command of Binoshi Assassins. Given the secretive nature of said assassins, it is doubtful that the galactic community will ever get to understand the inner workings of this most strange relationship. A bunch of Almaran bloodflies can be commanded to fly, hide, sleep, threaten, or even kill. They receive their commands through a combination of hand gestures and chirping, whistling sounds from their Binoshi masters. Given their near-invulnerability in large numbers, these insects are able to strike fear into even the most skilled combatants.
HorokThe horoks of Bodrin are a serious threat to the rural population of this world, though they are allowed to roam free, for the most part. They fear nothing, and will likely attack any decent-sized creature they see. Hunting in packs of 3-6, even the largest animals of Bodrin aren’t safe from these voracious predators. They are a respected prize on Elrood Sector’s modest safari circuit, however, and have been sought after by beast trainers in the past, but to no avail – said trainers either had to kill their captive horoks, or met their demise upon the animal’s fearsome tusks.
SnowcrabEasily the most frightening specimen of Lanthrym's meager assortment of wildlife, the giant snowcrabs are fearsome enough to keep most of that planet's citizens from venturing onto the surface of their world. The anatomy of a snowcrab, though rarely seen, is a curious one. The creature's trunk is supported by eight short, tough legs, incapable of moving the crab at any great speeds. From out the sides of the trunk come two to four wicked claws, each the length of a tall man, themselves reaching about five to ten meters from the main body. Atop the creature's trunk, like a crown, sits a mouthful of terrifying, rending teeth. The body of the creature, minus its swinging claws, stands about two metres tall. The snowcrab has no sense of sight or smell, though it can hear. To catch prey, the creature simply allows itself to be buried in snow, its clawed arms stretched outward, and waits. It's natural camouflage, a dull silver, helps the animal blend in with its icy surroundings. When the vibration of an approaching animal is sensed, the snowcrab will reveal its massive claws, and make a grab for the prey (most often, it will wait until the prey is nearest the centre of its claw span, so that it can attack with as many claws as possible). When the prey animal is seized, the claws will lift it up and carry it toward the mouth waiting at the centre of the creature. While its claws are strong enough as it is, there are not many creatures in the galaxy that can withstand the terrible bite of the snowcrab. While snowcrabs will attempt to eat anything, their chief source of food are lunga, a stout, migratory herbivore. The snowcrabs are familiar with the migratory patterns of the lunga, and spend the year moving themselves into the herd's path. Although the travelling lunga keep them alive, the animal most prized by the snowcrab is the wampa, and a fight between the two creatures can be a terrifying sight to behold. Like the wampa, the snowcrab is a hardy creature, and can survive easily in whatever arctic region it might be brought to.
